Nuclear Energy
Potential
Myanmar has also identified Uranium Ore Deposits
located throughout the country. Uranium Ore Deposits
known to exist within Union of Myanmar are as follows:

Current State of Exploitation
With the rapid growth in economic
development and the pressing demand of the existing
supply-demand gap and the responsibility to cope
with future electricity requirement, a need arise
to conduct studies for alternate energy sources
capable of producing power in high volume and densities.
Power generation plans in Myanmar
has all along based on hydropower and gas based
generation, consideration is made to use nuclear
power for future generation of electricity only
as an option.
It is believed that future demands
of electricity can be meet with available natural
gas resources and future development of hydropower
resources which presently has only been utilized
less than one percent of its potential.
As the nuclear energy is not
enviromentally friendly and development of nuclear
power requires high technology and also is capital
intensive, it is only at the stage of initiating
study on nuclear energy as an ongoing programme
on alternative energy sources.
Future Plan
Studies are ongoing on ways and means to utilize
nuclear sources for application and at the same
time advantages and disadvantages of nuclear energy
and also cause and effect experienced by developing
countries on implementation and utilization of nuclear
energy in various fields will compared and analysis
made.
It is planned to make following parallel studies
with the aim to study the nuclear energy source
for peaceful purpose within the country and will
be limited to and focused on social, economic and
education aspects.
(a) Study of the development of radioactive ore
known to exist in the country;
(b) Building in house capability on nuclear energy
to assist in energy sector long term planning
Interested parties from inside the country and
abroad are welcomed for possible cooperation and
assistance in both technology and financing on the
future development and utilization of nuclear energy.
